How to Measure Hands Before Ordering Custom Biker Gloves

Measure each member against the supplier’s chart for the exact glove model: hand circumference first, hand length second, then confirm the proposed size with a physical sample. Custom motorcycle glove hand measurement should never be derived from a T-shirt, vest or generic glove size because charts and pattern proportions can differ by model.

How to measure hands before ordering custom biker gloves

Ask the supplier for the current chart and measuring instructions before collecting sizes. Record whether the chart expects inches or centimeters, which hand to measure, the exact tape position and whether the hand should be relaxed. If the instructions differ from this general workflow, follow the supplier’s method.

A fitting coordinator measures a rider's hand circumference with a soft tape at a clean workshop bench.
Measure palm circumference at the location and tape tension specified for the exact model.

Record circumference without guessing

  1. Remove bulky rings or objects only if the supplier’s instructions require it.
  2. Keep the hand relaxed and fingers in the stated position.
  3. Wrap a flexible tape around the specified part of the palm, usually below the knuckles and excluding the thumb when directed.
  4. Keep the tape flat and comfortably snug rather than compressing the hand.
  5. Record the value immediately with its unit and member code.

Do not round into a size until the supplier’s chart says how boundaries are handled. If a measurement sits between sizes, flag it for merchant review rather than applying a club-wide rule.

Measure hand length separately

Place the hand as shown by the supplier and measure from the specified wrist reference to the longest fingertip. Record length independently from circumference; two members with the same palm measurement can have different finger proportions. A photo of the measurement setup can help the merchant identify an incorrect starting point before the order proceeds.

A motorcycle club recorder captures a rider's hand length on an unmarked measuring guide.
Keep the measurement, unit, hand and chart revision together in one row.

Use a model-specific record

For each member, save member code, measured hand, circumference, length, units, proposed size, glove model, chart revision, sample tried and result. Re-measure entries that are incomplete, written in mixed units or taken with a visibly loose tape. The order approver should freeze this record before quantities are totaled.

A measurement is not a promise of fit. Pattern shape, lining, seams and closure can affect how a specific model feels. That is why the club should request a sample or size set when available and record the exact sample identity.

Check finger length and closure with a sample

While stationary, confirm that fingers reach the intended position without obvious excess or compression, the thumb can move normally, seams do not create an immediate pressure point and the wrist closure operates as designed. Repeat the check after any approved decoration sample is applied. Record pass, reject or open question instead of relying on “feels about right.”

A mature rider and organizer check finger length and wrist closure on an unbranded glove sample.
A physical sample checks fit and operation; it does not establish protective certification.

Avoid two common errors

Do not map apparel sizes to glove sizes. A member who wears a large shirt is not automatically a large in a particular glove. Do not infer protection from construction. Leather, padding or a motorcycle look does not prove a standard or performance rating. Any such claim needs evidence for the exact finished model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which measurement comes first?

Use the order in the supplier’s instructions. The canonical preparation workflow records both hand circumference and hand length before assigning a proposed size.

What if a member falls between sizes?

Flag the row and ask the merchant how that exact model should be handled. Do not invent a rounding rule.

Should both hands be measured?

Follow the supplier’s method. If asymmetry matters or the chart is unclear, record both and ask which value controls the order.

Send your authorized artwork, quantities and completed measurement or sample checklist to request a design and quote review for custom gloves.
